The submersible sand pump, also known as the submersible slurry pump or submersible dredge pump, is an innovative sand pump, designed by the OCEAN Pump. In China, this submersible dredge pump is mainly used to pump slurry containing solid particles such as sand, cinder, tailing and others from mines, thermal power plants, rivers and lakes. In Southeast Asian countries, when there is a power source near the construction site, this sand suction pump is mainly used to extract media such as fine sand or mud. The submersible sand suction pump has hundreds of product models, and the impeller of the product can also be in the form of slurry pump or gravel pump. According to the actual needs of customers, choose the impeller or pump casing for wear-resistant or large-particle media.

The essence of the extraction medium of the submersible sand pump is that the water is rich in sediment. The standard stipulates: It is suitable for conveying medium containing suspended solid particles (such as quartz sand, ore, rock, ash, coal, sand, etc.) in the liquid. The maximum allowable value of the conveyed slurry density is divided into three grades, namely:

  1. Low concentration conditions, density ≤1100kg/m3

Main use places: coal mine area, used to transport coal slime and cinder particles. The maximum concentration allowed to be extracted (heaviness ratio): 29% of fine slime, 20% of tailing, 15% of quartz sand, and 13% of tailing sand.

  1. High concentration conditions, density ≤1300kg/m3

Main places of use: Slurry transportation in the technological process, or rock blasting construction drainage without specific measures to control the sand content. The maximum allowable concentration (gravity ratio): 40% of fine coal slime and tailing slime, 37% of quartz sand and 33% of tailing sand.

  1. Ultra-high concentration working condition, density ≤1500kg/m3

Main places of use: professional sand mining, transportation of tailing sand, or thick slurry transportation without specific measures to control the sediment content. Maximum allowable concentration (gravity ratio): 60% of fine coal slime and tailing slime, 40% yellow clay, 54% quartz sand, 48% tailing sand, and 42% iron concentrate.

Note: a) The value of the proportion: iron concentrate 4.9, tailing sand 3.3, quartz sand 2.65, yellow clay 2.6, tailing slime 1.8, and refined slime 1.45.

  1. For other media, select thesubmersible sand pump according to the slurry density and solid specific gravity with reference to the above parameters.

One of our regular Malaysia customer has cooperated with OCEAN Pump for many years. He has purchased equipments from us beginning of he contacting this industry firstly. Compared with other types of sand pumps or sand dredgers, the customer used the submersible dredge pump in the previous project, so he is more familiar with this type of sand suction pump. At the same time, long-term cooperation makes customer to be very reliable in the quality of our products. Therefore, in new projects, customers still wanted us to choose and provide equipments for them. The client had an ongoing sand suction project in Malaysia. In order to speed up the construction progress, the client wanted to use a larger submersible sand pump to work. The requirements were as follows:

  1. There weretwo different sand extraction points in the construction site, and at least 2 submersible dredgepumps were required.
  2. The sand bed waslooseenough, and the sand was very fine, but the solid concentration is a lot high, about 40%;
  3. The minimum flow requirement of thesandsuction pump was 80 cubic meters per hour;
  4. Because the terrain wasnot flat enough, there waslarge slope. Between the dredging point to the discharging point, there was a vertical height, about 45m. And the total discharge distance was about 400.

The engineer of our technical department calculated the resistance loss of the sand discharge pipeline throughout the process, and finally chose the ZJQ100-60-45 submersible sand pump for the customer. HDPE pipe with an outer diameter of 150mm was selected as the discharging pipeline to ensure that it could meet the transportation requirements.

Another reason we recommended this sand suction pump to our customers is its design. There are two biggest highlights of the submersible dredge pump, mainly designed for sealing and wear. First is sealing.

  1. Air seal structure: motor shaft extension end is separated from sand or mud
  2. Using a specially designed double-sided hard alloy mechanical seal: to improve the reliability of mechanical seals. The machine seal is lubricated by oil, and there is a large amount of oil in the machine seal cavity, which can further prevent the entry of slurry.
  3. There is an independent “communication room” between the mechanical seal cavity and the bearing room, and the “communication room” has a passage with the “water storage room”.Even if the mechanical seal fails, a small amount of leaked slurry will flow to the “water storage room” and will not contact the bearing, avoiding the loss of bearing grease and prolonging the life of the bearing.
  4. The motorof the submersible sand pump is a closed cavity, and the high temperature and high pressure will discharge the slurry in the “water storage room” or “oil storage room” through the safety valve.
  5. The winding position in the motor cavity is relatively high. Even if water enters the motor cavity, it will not directly contact the winding. This structure can extend the life of the motor.The motor has a high insulation level and strong resistance to humidity and heat, which can further increase the life of the motor.

The second is wear.

  1. Improving the material of the mouth ring can greatly increase the life of the sand pump with a small increase in cost.
  2. The space guide vane structure can avoid the effective circular movement of the sediment, and it is more wear-resistant than the volute structure and has a longer life.
  3. The low specific speed impeller adopts herringbone blades to improve the narrow flow channel, increase the up and down, left and right distances between the impeller and the pump casing, reduce the length of the flow channel, improve the passage performance of sediment, control the flow, and reduce the wear between the sand and the flow channel wall.
  4. The impeller, pump body and other vulnerable parts of the submersible sand pumpare made of thickened materials, wear-resistant materials, and alloy linings to increase wear resistance.
