HQ Series Electronic Control Pumps

TQ Series 60 Hz Electronic Control Pumps

FEATURES:
  • The TQ comes complete with pump, motor, pressure tank, and electronic controller all in one unit. The electronic controller ensures the pump starts automatically when water is utilized, providing constant pressure, and operates continuously until water is no longer required and is turned off.
  • Constructed from corrosion resistant stainless steel and glass filled noryl materials.

  • Suitable for use in gravity flow storage tanks, well systems, home additions, and other low water pressure applications.
  • The TQ pumps have an automatic shut off if they run dry for 2 minutes. The pump will shut off for ten minutes and then attempt to restart. If three attempts are made and all three attempts fail again, due to dry run, the pump will rest for one hour and then attempt to restart. This protection sequence will continue until the water supply is back to normal.
  • The motor has a built-in thermal overload to protect against high operating temperatures and over current. (Single phase motor)
  • These TQ pumps have an anti-cycling feature to help prevent the pump from continuous starting and stopping if you have a dripping faucet or minor leak in your system.

The TQI series pumps are designed for boosting water pressure in residential, commercial and light industrial applications when water demand is high but inadequate water pressure exists. They will maintain a constant water pressure in spite of fluctuating water use. The pressure sensor signals the inverter (control panel), which in turn sends a signal to the pump, to change the speed of the pump as needed to keep your water pressure constant and water flow consistent.

City Water Supply Pressure Reducing Requirements

If your incoming water pressure is greater than 50 psi, (or 45 psi if using the TQ3700) then a pressure reducing valve must be installed on the suction side (inlet side) of the pump, even if you already have a pressure reducing valve provided by your local water utility. Many city water utilities use pressure reducing valves which are typically set for 80 or 90 psi, but this high of a pressure combined with the discharge pressure the pump creates will damage the pump because it will exceed the maximum 120 psi system pressure.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. "How are the TQ pumps activated?"
A. The TQ pumps have a built-in pressure switch and internal flow switch. Either one of these will activate the pump depending on water consumption. The pump will start when the pressure is BELOW the pressure switch activation point, or the water flow rate is greater than 0.7 GPM. The preset pressure switch activation point for each model is provided in the pump specifications chart listed under "Factory Start Pressure Setting (PSI)." The incoming water pressure must be lower than the preset activation point; otherwise the pump will not start.

Q. "Are the TQ Series pumps self-priming?"
A. No. The TQ and TQI Series pumps must be primed before operation. The TQ pumps have a built-in check valve, that will allow the pump to then pump water from depths of 25 feet or less without the worry of priming the pump each time as long as a foot valve is installed at the suction inlet. However, the pump must always be checked for prime if not used for a prolonged period of time. It is imperative to fill the pump with water before operation as dry running causes irreparable damage to the mechanical seal.

Q. "Can the 'start pressure setting' be adjusted?"
A. The TQ Series pumps are supplied with a factory preset pressure switch and are not designed to be field adjusted. However, the TQI Series pumps are also factory preset but can be field adjusted to higher inlet pressures only if the water source pressure is higher than 43 psi and is lower than the pressure value you set. If the preset pump value is set lower than the water source pressure, the pump will not turn on.

Q. "What is the purpose of the built-in pressure tank?"
A. It is designed to help keep the motor from repeatedly cycling on and off due to small flow demand or a minor leak in your water system. The built-in pressure tank holds a certain amount of water and if there is a minor leak in the piping system the water will slowly leave the pressure tank. This will steadily reduce the pressure until it falls below the pressure switch activation point (Factory Start Pressure Setting) and turns the pump on to bring the pressure back up. Pumps last longer by having longer running times and fewer cycles. The built-in pressure tank will usually be sufficient for a minor leak. But if the leak is causing the pump to cycle on and off too frequently then the leak should be fixed.

If the pump is cycling on and off because of something being used in the system like a slow closing float valve or slow running faucet, or other condition, then an extra external pressure tank (typically 2-3 gallon) can be added to the discharge side of the pump which can decrease the on/off cycle rate of the pump and help extend the life of the pump.

Q. "How does the anti-cycling feature work to prevent the pump from continuously starting and stopping?"
A. The pump will run for 8 seconds and then stop for approximately 3 seconds. If this type of cycling repeats itself 15 times in a row then the pump will turn off and rest for 1 hour. After an hour it will again start and if the same type of repeat cycling occurs (15 times) it will again shut off and rest for 1 hour. This will continue until the problem is corrected. This automatic protection will occur if the pump is repeatedly cycling on and off caused by small flow rates (less than 0.3 GPM), an air pocket in the system, a leak in the pipeline, or an air loss in the pressure tank.

Q. "The HQ400 booster pump has 1" inlets and outlets. Will the pump work correctly if we transition the 1" inlet to a 3/4" inlet line?"
A. For the maximum performance of the pump, it's a rule of thumb to stick with the 1" inlet. However, we've seen applications where a 3/4" reduction has been used on the inlet side. For this to happen, you need to make sure the flow demand on your system is not up to the range where it's close to the maximum flow capacity of the pump, say about 20 gpm. The higher the flow demand, the more susceptible the pump will be to losing prime, since the flow demand could be greater than the amount of water feeding into the pump.
