The Best Pool Heaters to Keep Your Pool at the Perfect Temperature

Get precise control over the temperature of the water, and keep your pool open for longer.

Staff

There are often days in spring or late fall when it’s warm enough that you might consider jumping into your pool for a quick dip—but the idea is probably fleeting once you check its temperature. After all, 60-degree water is more frigid than refreshing!

If your pool doesn’t have a heater, its temperature will fluctuate depending on the weather, often cutting swimming season short. Pool heaters are typically quite expensive, but they allow you to use your swimming pool for longer each year and adjust the daily water temperature to your liking, making them a worthwhile investment for many people.

What to Consider

There are several factors to think about when selecting a pool heater, which come in several styles. Traditional pool heaters are typically the most powerful options, and they can be powered by natural gas, propane, or electricity. However, solar heater mats have become increasingly popular, as they’re significantly less expensive, but keep in mind they give you less control over the water’s temperature.

You’ll also want to make sure to select an appropriately sized heater—models with a high BTU output can warm up large pools more quickly, but they also use more fuel. In general, you can find an appropriate BTU output by calculating your pool’s surface area (multiply length by width), then dividing the number by three. Take that number and multiply it by 1,000. For instance, if your pool is 15x30 feet, you’ll need a 150,000-BTU heater for optimal results.
